An 11 year old adventure seeker (Jake Chambers) discovers another dimension (Mid-World) where he encounters a gunslinger named Roland Deschain. The gunslinger is on a quest to stop the “Man in Black” (Walter O’Dim) from destroying the Dark Tower that resides in End-World. The Dark Tower is the nexus of time and space which holds the universe together. This battle between good and evil will determine the fate of the universe. Based on the best selling Stephen King novels.
How was the movie?
There is not a lot to say about the movie except that it was OK. I have never read the novels so I don’t have a lot to compare it too. But according to fans of the novel, it is a big disappointment and strays form the source material. The film seems shallow and uninspiring with nothing that really stands out. The story is very simplified and the plot seems generic compared to Stephen Kings compelling and complex story. There are some good action scenes and visuals that will keep you going though. I thought Idris Elba did a good job as the Gunslinger and I like Jake Chambers as the boy. But I wasn’t crazy about Matthew McConaughey’s performance as the “Man in Black”. This movie could have been so much more and it falls a little flat for me. But If you don’t expect to much you might not be disappointed.
Was The Dark Tower worth the 4DX price?
The 4DX was pretty much like the movie, it was OK. But once again, it does enhance the movie. They did use a lot of smoke throughout the movie. I love this effect and really enhances the movie when used right. They need to release more smoke though because it dissipates to fast. There was a lot of gun fire in the movie which utilizes the air pressure shot behind both sides of your head. Wind was also used frequently which I love because it always adds a level of immersion. There is nothing better than an epic moment with the seat slowly panning and your hair blowing in the wind. I am once again missing the 3D and I am pretty bummed movies are not using it as much anymore. 4DX and 3D are meant for each other! So no 3D + uninspiring movie adaption + mediocre 4DX = save your hard earned money.
